Iontopheresis is a technique where we can use a very small electrical pulse (of similar intensity to a TENS machine) to deliver cortisone to the appropriate site. It is essentially and injection without the needle.
It is extremely useful in those individuals with a fear of needles or where injections are often too painful eg. Sole of foot for plantar fasciitis, Achilles for achilllestendinopathy or outside of elbow for tennis elbow.
It requires administration over 3 sessions and the cortisone medication can be arranged by your physiotherapist with your GP.
The cost is the same as for a standard consultation plus the purchase of the cortisone medication and the electrodes which are a one use only supply.
If you have any questions about iontopheresis please feel free to ask your physio.
