Scheuermann’s Disease

Scheuermann’s Disease or Scheuermann’s Kyphosis is a condition that results in an increased rounding of the upper back.

It is the uneven growth of the vertebrae causing a wedge shape. This increases the kyphosis (curve in the upper back). Whilst it is usually diagnosed in children, more mild cases can be missed and cause pain and frustration in adults.

The cause of Scheuermann’s disease is unknown, however it has a tendency to run in families.

Treatment looks at:

  • Improving strength and mobility
  • Improving movement and breathing biomechanics
  • Education
  • Hydrotherapy

While exercise won’t correct the deformity, it can be helpful in maintaining flexibility, and alleviating back pain and fatigue. A physiotherapist will work with your individual needs and help you work towards your goals.
