Dry needling is the practice of inserting single-use sterile needles into a muscular trigger point to help with the release of tight muscles and spasm. Dry needling produces an overall relaxation effect through the release of chemicals and hormones locally in the body, in the same manner as acupuncture. In fact 87% of dry needling trigger points are the same as acupuncture points, so there are a great number of similarities.
Dry needling can also be very effective in the relief of referred nerve pain and can target points of pain much deeper than can be reached by soft tissue therapy using the hands and with much less patient discomfort. It is also has an overall relaxation effect and is very effective in the relief of headaches, neck and back pain. Dry needling is used in a wide variety of cases, from the elite sporting population, through to the elderly.
